Women of Wichita County, Texas: Stories About Remarkable Women
In my 90+ years I’ve witnessed amazing things in the lives of women and men.
Born only ten years after women received the right to vote. I saw men land on the moon, thanks to the marvels of television. Remembering how expensive long distance telephone calls were, I can now FaceTime with my whole family for pennies, thanks to satellites orbiting the earth. Beginning in the 20th century, women sought and received more education and moved into more and more and career fields. Women didn’t leave the kitchen or stop bearing children, they juggled duties there with their responsibilities in various positions from physicians to astronauts, from teachers to CEOs, from engineers to military service and on and on. Even full time homemakers were volunteering in organizations to better the community and provide for the less fortunate. Here are some of the stories of your neighbors and friends. Enjoy. -Lita Watson |

Historical Markers of Wichita County, Texas, 1936 - 2020
Former Wichita County Archivist Lita Watson wrote, “In the walled city of Jerusalem, there is a gate known as the New Gate. It is over 500 years old. In Huddersfield, England, nestled in the Yorkshire Dales, it is not uncommon to see a structure that dates from the 1700s. But our country is only 244 years old, and our county is now 138 years old. Items relevant to our history are not going to have the age of those in Europe and Asia or even parts of Texas and the United States. But that does not decrease from their historical value to this area.”

“Without a doubt, this has to be the best ever book published about Historical Markers in a county in Texas. I have searched high and low all over Texas and have yet to find one as well put together as this this one. We have more than 100 historical markers in Wichita County and they are all named in this book with colorful images of each.” Brice Blair, Wichita County Archives.
